ASPIRING DEPOP ICON

Countless individuals these days are engaging with their passions and making money on their own time. Thanks to endless online platforms, the entrepreneur has endless ways to promote themselves. One way this can be done is through Depop. We all know many people recently have been hopping on Depop to sell their clothes to other queens hunting down their perfect style. It’s a great way to support second hand fashion as a consumer and make a quick buck as a seller. LA native Cordi has been on their Depop grind since the middle of the COVID pandemic about six months ago. They started their Depop shop @iprefertoliveindaydreams because they, of course, “love thrifting, love clothes, and need money”. To get a better idea of the seller’s perspective, I interviewed Cordi on their experience with the popular fashion marketplace app.

Just like everything else, Depop can have its downsides. Cordi voiced their concerns that most buyers on the app don’t recognize sellers as real people trying to run their own businesses. More specifically, they stated, “I don’t think they see me as a business owner and sometimes see [Depop] as more of a social media platform”. They go on to suggest that Depop become a more seller based shopping app as opposed to a consumer based one.

This is not to downplay the fun of having one’s own Depop shop. In fact, Cordi mentioned how amazing it feels to be able to curate their own brand. The best part is that they gets to have all the creative freedom in the world by picking the clothes themselves, doing their own photoshoots of the clothes being modeled, and editing the photos according to their own aesthetic preferences. In reference to their second hand items for sale, Cordi states “I don’t sell what I think people will like, but what I like” and adding that “...this [shop] is really mine”. They go on to mention how they now want to make a career out of Depop, completely investing their time into their second hand fashion dreams. Being that they have full control over their business’s products, style, and aesthetic, there are real benefits of control and self expression when one has their own online shop.

Nothing is perfect, but all in all, Depop can be a lovely, expressive, and engaging outlet that you just might want to pick up as a young fashion icon. My Depop idol, Cordi, is just one example of someone taking their passion and using online platforms as an opportunity to make that passion their livelihood, doing what makes them happy at such a young age. Whether it be a hustle, side hustle, or hobby is it great to see so many having their Nasty Gal moment and making bank off their love of fashion.
